Deaf history teaching resources
Every year, six- and seven-year olds across England learn about Pepys when they study the Great Fire of London as part of the National Curriculum. Using original research from Pepys’s diary, our resources show children, women, people of colour and deaf people at the time of the Fire. Pepys’s diary contains one of the first detailed accounts of a signed conversation in English, which just happens to be about another scary fire in 1666!
This project aims to give teachers new ways to teach the Great Fire, to help young people feel ownership over their history, and to spark interest in the 17th century.
